The Voodoo that U Do!

Life really is funny.  You start looking back at past events and how things happen to steer you in a certain direction…

One day in April 2007, I am making a long car trip across the state.  I can’t even recall why.  The radio is on seek and up pops an NPR station.  I stop the dial and start listening to the news which then leads to “The Splendid Table“.  Now all I can think of is that SNL skit, “The Delicious Dish” and I am just about to hit seek again when I hear the words that stopped me in my tracks – bacon doughnut.

What????  A bacon doughnut????  Okay NPR, you got me.

So I start listening…

The story is about this place in Portland called Voodoo Doughnuts, described in their words as a Goth doughnut shop.  I listen further about this place and they then begin to talk about the maple bacon doughnut.  I kid you not, my mouth begins to water!  Man, if I ever get to Portland…

Cut to two months later.  I had started watching “Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations” and he’s in the Pacific Northwest!  So what’s one of the places he highlights???  Voodoo Doughnuts!!!  Hey, I remember this place from that radio show.  This is the first chance I get to now SEE this magical doughnut and as Tony destroys his, my mouth again begins to water!  If I ever get to Portland…

So it’s now August of 2007 and Fathead has suddenly decided that we were going to sponsor the AST Dew Tour to promote our new line of Action Sports wall graphics.  We quickly negotiate for space at their last three events, the first for us will be in Portland.  PORTLAND?!?  Wait a minute…I think that’s home to Voodoo Doughnuts!!!  I pop on the Google Machine to confirm and KA-POW!!  It’s all starting to come together!  I am going to Portland and I am going to go to Voodoo Doughnuts and I am going to EAT A BACON MAPLE DOUGHNUT!!!

It’s a very tiny little place in oldtown Portland with a sign so small, it would be very easy to walk right by the place and never know it  TV makes everything look so much bigger!  Once inside, there is a counter, a rotating glass display with the featured donuts and two 4′x4′ tables.  That was it!  But it didn’t disappoint, there was a great vibe around the place.

I walked to the counter and made my order.  I shall have a maple bacon doughnut and an old dirty bastard (the other featured in the Bourdane piece).

First – the old dirty bastard.  This is a glazed doughnut with chocolate, crushed Oreos and peanut butter drizzle.  This is a doughnut that will literally cause your teeth to fall straight out of your mouth!  I drank just about ALL of my 20 oz coffee to help get this incredibly sweet circle down.

Then came the moment I had been anticipating since that long car ride…the moment I was led to by fate…

There she was, the Maple Bacon Bar!!!  A simple glazed long john with a maple frosting and two almost perfectly cooked pieces of bacon on top!

Oh my goodness!  Am I in heaven?  Why didn’t anyone ever do this before?  Why aren’t others rushing to copy this simple yet absolutely delicious thing?!?

I am tellin’ you, it was just so good.

Voodoo Doughnuts proved their slogan correct – “The Magic is in the Hole.”

If you are ever in Portland – GO!!!

Voodoo, for the Maple Bacon Bar, you get 10 PIGGIES EATING BACON!!

For the old dirty bastard, you get my dentist bill.
