Better with Bacon – Bacon Bit Burgers

Look at that picture…makes a mouth water.  Bacon bits inside the beef patty with smoked guoda and steakhouse onion!! The thing of it is, this recipe was cooked up by the miniture devil, Rachel Ray.  Now I don’t like Rachel, I find her quite annoying and her voice just grates on me…but I’ll give her this, it does sound delicious and simple – my two favorite things.

I came across this recipe at Eat My Charlotte.  Click thru to get the whole scoop!

Happy eating!

Memorial for Siren Baird

Today we lost our “puppy”.  By “puppy” I mean 8.5 year old Great Dane.  She was a beautiful dog, incredibly friendly and docile.  I didn’t want her at first, but I gave in to Better Half’s pleas.  She tore up our floor, got hair everywhere, always had terrible breath and made a much better door than a window.  She also waited for us to get home in the front window, would nuzzle and lean up against you and NEVER acted up or raised a bark!  She was protective of her “sister” Lil’ Baird and of her “mom” when she was pregnant.  She loved popcorn and Greenies.  She crossed her paws in front of her when she laid down, looking quite content with herself.  She would run in her sleep and get a “Billy Idol” lip that always made me smile.

She had a good day today, sunning herself on the back porch and laying by her “mom’s” feet.  The doctor was kind enough to come to our house and with a simple shot, she passed peacefully and quietly with the two people who had cared for her unconditionally stroking her head the entire time.

She was a good dog and I loved her and now I miss her!

Lazy Sunday…

Just chillin’ in the crib today with Better Half and Lil’ Baird! Woke up super late due to this freakin’ cold that’s been moving around our house. But when I did wake, it was to the smell of coffee and banana bread – God love Better Half.  It wasn’t bacon…but still pretty darn good!

Wanted to share two things today with my 10’s of readers…

First, a reminder about “Bacon Sunday III“. It is next Sunday. Visit “The Daily BaconFacebook group page for more info and to confirm you will be attending…

Second, as I was bouncing around the various bacon blogs on the interwebs today, I came across this great video. It’s on YouTube but credit to the Bacon Salt Blog for posting…for your pleasure and because I know you don’t bounce around Bacon sites on your Sunday, I give you Jim Gaffigan

Truer words have never been spoken.

Enjoy the rest of your Sunday and GO SPARTANS!

Meat Madness Update…

Just a reminder that “Meat Madness” voting is going on daily at sogoodblog.com.

Results from the first two days of competition:

Wednesday saw #1 seed in the “Red” Meat division STEAK handily beat down ROAST BEEF 88% to 12%. While in the 4 v. 5 match up of  BUFFALO and VEAL, BUFFALO squeaked by 57% to 48%.

STEAKs beat down of ROAST BEEF was nothing compared to what BACON did to PORK CHOPS yesterday. BACON maintained their position as the #1 overall seed with a commanding 91% to 9% victory. The other match up in the “Pork” region was HAM up against PULLED PORK. In a minor upset, the #5 seed, PULLED PORK (which probably should have been a higher seed) took down HAM 67% to 33%.

Check back everyday on sogoodblog.com and make your meat choice HEARD!

Top Speed Bacon…

The Pinewood Derby!  Being a former cub scout these three little words bring back great memories for me.  We would eagerly anticipate receiving our brown paper bag that held the requisite materials to build the race car of your dreams: 1) a block of wood, 2) four plastic wheels, 3) four long nails to hold the wheels in the car.  How my imagination would race as to what I wanted to build.

Thank the maker for my grandfather!  I would bring everything to GP and we’d get to work, putting in long nights after school in his basement.  The tools he’d normally use to build dollhouse furniture for my grandmother would suddenly find new life as we created the ultimate car together.   He didn’t cut corners either, no sir.  I was expected to sand and sand and sand some more.  That car, once cut, had to be as smooth as a babies behind.  We’d then paint, and sand, paint, sand, lacquer, sand, final coat of lacquer and then the finish paper.

My cars were fierce and I am very happy to say that we not only came in first the year I was a “Bear” scout, but also took that car to regionals.  I got a little plaque and my car stayed mounted to that for years after.  I LOVED Pinewood Derby!!

Why do I bring this up…because I received two things recently that reminder me of how cool the derby is AND they are both bacon related!

First, this bit from a story in the “Belmont & Mount Holly Banner News” in North Carolina.  The story was titled, “Hot Bacon and Greased Lightning at Scouts’ Pinewood Derby”.

His son, Brandon, a Webelo, had a red sporty car with chrome accents he named Hot Bacon.

Brandon said he took the car’s name from a family ritual.

“Breakfast,” he said, laughing. “Mom actually came up with the bacon idea and I added the word ‘hot’ to it.”

Brilliant!!  I mean, is there a better name?  Wait…I think there just might be…

The second came from my old childhood friend Colleen (SHOUT OUT!)

n645839718_1252672_415

LOOK AT THAT!!!  It’s the MACON BACON!!  and the tag – “Where Pigs Can Fly”!!  SERIOUSLY!!!  Kid is a genius.  I want to hang with him!!

So there you go…two little thing that in recent weeks have helped me to remember some great times with GP AND provided content to the blog.  KA-POW!

True Crime Stories…

This came through my Google machine the other day…courtesy of the “Somerville Journal” from Somerville, MO.  You got to love the old police blotter…

Somerville – Officer Michael Capasso was working a paid detail for On The Hill Tavern at 499 Broadway March 7 at about 12:30 a.m. when bar staff alerted him that 37-year-old Anthony Pisani had gone into the kitchen without permission, took a plate of bacon and began to eat. When a bar employee told Pisani he was not allowed in the kitchen and to put down the plate of bacon, Pisani allegedly refused, saying he was hungry and needed to eat.

The employee took the plate out of Pisani’s hands after he ignored the requests, according to police reports. When Capasso told Pisani to leave the kitchen area, Pisani allegedly stated, “I am f— hungry” and got into a defensive fight stance and lunged at the bar employee.

“F— you, you pig,” Pisani allegedly said after Capasso grabbed him to stop him from swinging his fists at the employee.

Two employees helped Capasso escort Pisani out of the bar, but not before he allegedly punched one of the employees and Capasso, according to reports.

Once outside, Pisani allegedly pushed Capasso backwards into a car and even continued to charge at Capasso after he used pepper spray on Pisani, according to police officials. Police were able to handcuff Pisani, who allegedly made threatening statements to police, only after a struggle and more pepper spray, according to reports.

Pisani, who is listed as living at 475 Nantasket Ave. in Hull, was charged with disorderly conduct, assault and battery, resisting arrest and assault and battery on a police officer.

So an entire kitchen of stuff and he goes straight to the plate of bacon?  NICE! My kind of drunk…

While I personally have never tried pepper spray bacon…I hope it was tasty!  It may be the last bit of bacon he gets for a while.

Better With Bacon – Bacon, Tomato & Cheese Pizza

I had a whole Little Caesar’sHot-N-Ready” pizza for lunch today…ugh…

The only good thing about that is I have pizza on the brain (and heavy in the stomach), so this week’s recipe is a nice, simple homemade pie.  Courtesy of “The Dallas Morning News

 2 tablespoons cornmeal
1 (10-ounce) can refrigerated pizza crust, uncooked
1 (10 ¾ -ounce) can condensed, zesty tomato soup
3/4 cup marinated sun-dried tomatoes
3/4 cup cooked, crumbled bacon
1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
1/3 cup parmesan cheese

Preheat oven to 425 F. Sprinkle cornmeal on bottom of a pan.  Place pizza crust over cornmeal. Spread soup evenly over crust and arrange tomatoes over soup. Top with bacon, cheddar cheese and parmesan. Bake for 16 to 20 minutes or until crust is lightly browned. Makes 4 servings.

It’s March – Let the Madness Begin…

Mega props to the fine folks at sogoodblog.com.  In the spirit of March Madness, they bring us…

meat-maddness-round-1-bracket1[bracket via sogoodblog - click image to see full bracket]

That’s right “MEAT MADNESS” and this bracket has got something for everyone.

Now, the name of this blog is “The Daily Bacon“, so you know who I am taking to win the whole thing.  I see a tough battle against Pulled Pork, but really Bacon should be victorious.

In the other regions, I am calling for Turkey to beat Chicken in the Poultry Region, I am intrigued about the Tuna / Shrimp and the Salmon / Crab match ups in the Fish Region (but I think the higher seeds prevail) and in “Red” Meat…I think Corned Beef battles Steak for that spot in the final four.

What do you think?  Play along starting Wednesday at sogoodblog.com.

So brilliant, wish I thought of it!
