NOLA – Heaven on a Bun!…and more…

Ah, New Orleans!  Even in April you can cut the air with a knife.

Well, it wasn’t that bad, just this Michigan boy wasn’t ready for it.  I especially wasn’t ready for it at load in with the expo hall open to the elements.  We just had a small piece of truss to put up by the time I got there and I think I lost 10 pounds in water weight.  Other than that, set up went great and we were out of there in no time.

So what to do Saturday afternoon in New Orleans?  Why, eat and drink of course.

I have been watching “Man vs. Food” on the Travel Channel lately.  On their visit to NOLA, they went to a place called Mother’s and what they showed made my mouth water.  So I was determined to make a stop.  Oh was I ever glad I did.

That above is the Ferdi!!  It’s Mother’s famous po-boy – a great combination of ham, roast beef, creole mustard, pickle, slaw and debris (DAY-Bree as they say it).  What is debris???  Well you know all that roast beef that falls away into the gravy (we’d know this a Au Jus) as the meat slow cooks?  That is debris and it is WONDERFUL!!  I had the “Ralph” Ferdi which added cheese and gravy dumped over the whole thing.

With my very first bite I was in HEAVEN!  You got ALL the great taste, the mustand playing off the pickle and slaw, they texture of the bread, the meat just melting in your mouth (especially the big old helpin’ of debris).  It was drippin’ all over my hands and I wouldn’t have had it any other way!  When I was done, I looked down at my shirt and I had so much gravy upsplash that I could have passed for a splatter scene on “CSI“, but I didn’t care.  It was a badge! I was a man who just ate a GREAT PO-BOY and I didn’t care who saw it!

Walking back to the hotel, I saw a snadwich board on a street corner – “Brandy Milk Punch, $5.00 all day”.  Brandy Milk Punch?  I say I have never even heard of such a drink.  Why wouldn’t I stop and have one?  In fact, I had two ;-)   These were tasty.  I don’t typically think of milk as a mixer, but I gotta tell you, this drink was softly sweet and very refreshing.  The big problem is that they go down real easy….

By the time I got back to the hotel, I was able to get a shower and change in before we headed out to dinner.  Decided to go to a little place in the quarter, Star Steak & Lobster House.  Turned out to be a great decision.  It’s always cool to find these sort of local joints and when you get a great meal, it makes it all the better.

So how did the evening end?  Well we were already in the quarter so on down to Bourbon St.  We just did one back and forth “tour” along the street stoppin’ in several bars for some zydeco, jazz and finally blues.  It was a good, low key night but still a ton of fun!

Got to get to work today…show opens at new so time for breakfast and then over to the show floor to finish detailing the TOMCAR’s.  What else does day two hold?  Let’s find out…
