NOLA…”It’s Rich”…

Day two in New Orleans and it was a good one.

The show we are at for TOMCAR didn’t open until 12:30 pm, so it gave us time to sleep in a bit from Bourbon St. the night before.  We still got to the Convention Center around 11:00 am and had plenty of time to detail the cars and just make sure everything was in place.  The cars showed real well and we had a lot of interest throughout the day.

Surprising to me was lunch in the exhibit hall.  They had a sausage and chicken gumbo in the buffet line and I got to tell you, it was terrific. It turns out that the gumbo was just a small taste of the Cajun cuisine we’d be eating that day!

mulatesAfter the show, we headed over across the street from the Convention Center to Mulate’s.  My colleagues and I ended up with some GREAT food on our table…Bodine with Spicy Mustard (I was crying at the table it was so hot), Red Beans and Rice (with big old ham chucks), Gator, Catfish and the most incredible dish I have had in a long while, Jumbo Crab Au Gratin.

The Crabmeat Au Gratin with veggies and twice baked potato!

When looking over the menu, I asked the waiter was he thought of the Au Gratin.  His direct quote:

“It’s Rich.”

Ladies and Gentlemen, FotDB, let me tell you that was the understatement of the year!!  The Au Gratin was a heavy cream and cheese mixture with GIANT chunks of crab, all baked to a bubbly mess in a metal tin with bread crumbs on top.  My first bite and I thought my teeth would all just fall out of my head.  It was so sweet, so creamy, so freakin’ good!!  But it was also heavy and just too much of a good thing.  I tried a few bites on their own, then was smothering it on some french bread and finally I had to scream “No Mas!!”  This little plate kicked my butt, but it was worth it!!

After dinner, it was off to a reception put on my the show organizers and then back over to Bourbon St.  Sunday’s a great day to walk the street…there was just enough people to still have a great vibe, but NO problem walking into any bar to get a drink or just grab a seat to listen to some music.  More Jazz and Blues last night – good stuff.

Last day today – if it is anything like the previous two in NOLA, then I can’t complain at all!
