It is official…”Meat Madness” came to a close this evening and your winner and still champion of all meats…
BACON!!!
That’s right!! Bacon clocked Steak 57% to 43%! It was an “other white meat” smack down!
So wear that blue ribbon with pride piggie…cause tomorrow we dine on swine!

Nerd News…Week 14
I was really straining for content for Nerd News this week.
These posts used to appear on Sunday’s, then Monday’s, then last week Wednesday and now here we are on a Friday. UGH! Trust me, it’s not that I not being a nerd, it’s just that all those nerdy things I do in the course of a week just sort of blend into this “nerd stew” that floats around in my brain and then when “forced” to write something, I can’t distinguish between one thing or another…
Let’s just run through some categories…maybe that’ll jog the old memory gland…

I’m an Idiot…Again…
Looking through my posts it came to my attention that I really hadn’t added much to my “Idiot” series of posts…after some soul searching, I figure now I should come clean, bear my soul if you will, to the 10′s of readers to this fine weblog (or blog as the kids call it) about a “small” incident that recently occurred.
Let me take you back to a few weekends ago when a little basketball tournament was happening in The “D”. My friend Sam Singh who is finishing up his 16 month trek around the world (see his blog at www.singharoundtheworld.com) flew back to Detroit just because Michigan State was in the Final Four. I picked him up on Saturday afternoon and we headed downtown to join in the festivities. That evening, as we are all aware, MSU beat UCONN and they were now going to advance to the Finals on Monday.
That next morning (Sunday) and I had planned for Better Half to bring Lil’ Baird downtown for brunch with Sam. “Uncle” Sam had not seen Lil’ Baird yet and Better Half wanted to also see Sam, so it seemed like a good plan. Little did I know that Better Half had been working on a plan of her own. FANTASTIC! I say to you sir, job well done! Even went as far as creating a smoker out of a trash can!
I’m tempted to try myself…run down to Eastern Market and grab me some pig…where can I find a smoker??? Oh and I need a slicer…

Packaged meat – oh how you deceive…
Walk through a meat department, see this on sale, pick up the package and from this view, that’s not bad lookin’ bacon. Then you open it…

What a train wreak!! The strips were sooooooo thin and broke in so many places that it was hard just getting them in the pans. Sure there looks like a decent amount of meat | fat ratio, but when you can look through a strip, that’s not good.

My goodness…I think this is a winner!! My mouth instantly began watering just reading the name of the recipe…then I saw this photo! I’m HUNGRY!!!

Meat Madness – There Can Be Only One!
What started as a battle of 32 meats has come down to this…
Steak v. Bacon for meat supremacy! I really thought Crab could score an upset over Steak, but Steak ended up CRUSHING Crab leading to this incredible match up!
The good people at So Good Blog have a “tale of the tape” on this final, epic battle! Voting for the finals opened today at noon and will go through Friday! When I voted it was Bacon 51% over Steak 49% – it’s gonna be a nail bitter til the bitter end!
Head over there NOW and may the best meat (Bacon) win!

A “Lesson” in Makin’ Bacon…
So I wake up this morning and pop down to my computer to check emails before starting the day and I see this from a former colleague of mine, Rob (SHOUT OUT)…
“You’re doing it all wrong”
I’m doing what wrong? I mean, that could apply to a number of things (just ask Better Half).
Then I click on the link and this is what I find…

It’s some dude telling me that I am cooking bacon the wrong way and then proceeds to show the “correct” way to make bacon.
Now, I agree that what he is showing is a proper way to cook bacon. The biggest point is using a low heat and getting the skillet hot before placing any bacon in the pan. But to say that I am cooking my bacon incorrectly, well sir, I just won’t stands for it!
Evidently I am not alone either if you scroll down and read all the comments. Most people, including yours truly, take advantage of the oven method. No fuss, no muss and my bacon comes out looking just like his “correct” bacon EVERY TIME!
Still, some good advice for “novice” bacon makers out there.
Oh and Rob – suck it!Â
