My boy, Sam Singh, has just returned from his 16 month journey around the world.  Yup, he quit his job, finished his term as mayor of a fine Midwestern city and took off with a backpack, computer and camera. You can read all about it at singharoundtheworld.com.  I am particularly partial to the posts about Turkey written by a mysterious guest blogger.

We will be welcoming him home in style this weekend in Chicago! Needless to say I will mostly either be a) drinking or b) recovering from drinking.

No worries, I’ve got some “robo-posts” set up so you’ll get some new content this weekend.

So I was bouncin’ through a bunch of  my bacon Google Alerts (look at that fine example of aliteration right there) and came across a link to this post from Gizmodo about the author’s trip to The Candy Expo.

Before I go further with the relevant bacon news, let me just say “Candy Expo” – hells yeah!  I have got to find a way to one day get into that show!  There are certain trade events that I have always wanted to attend (like CES) and some that I have crossed off the list (Toy Fair).  This goes right to the top baby!!  Maybe I can get a press pass next year on behalf of TDB???  Hmmmm.

I told you my trip to Utah two weeks ago produced another “Idiot” moment…so here it is:

It’s 6:00 am and I’m in line to get through screening at DTW.  I approach the TSA agent at the podium with my boarding pass and license.  She gives me the cursory look and begins examining my documents.  Then, she lingers…uh oh…she is staring at my license, flipping it back and forth and then after what seems to be an eternity she asks the other agent “How long do they have after their license expires?”

What?!?  Expired driver’s license???

Yuppers!  Someone (that being this guy) had a birthday the week before and didn’t bother to notice it was time to renew.  I mean who ever looks at the expiration date on their license anyway.

Before you ask, yes, the Secretary of State sent a reminder about both my license and my tabs but me being me conveniently forgot about this and went on my merry way through life.

So here I am at TSA, holding up the line, already pushing to get on my flight and I’ve got an expired license.  UGH!  [Read more →]

Note to all those that think my fascination/consumption/pure love of bacon boarders on fanaticism…

I only scored an 85…so I’m not that “crazy”.     

But I did outscore my “Sister in Bacon” over at Skulls and Bacon…so I got that goin’ for me.

This last week was the semi-finals for “Britain’s Got Talent” and unless you have been living under a rock or are completely unplugged from the modern world, you have heard of Susan Boyle.

Short recap: Ms. Boyle is 48ish, lives with her cat and cared for her mother, swore she’d never been kissed, frumpy with a unibrow and she ended up going on stage during auditions and knocking a song right out of the park.  That video subsequently become a viral phenomenon and she was suddenly thrusted to celebrity status.  The link to her first appearance on the show is HERE.  Even the most jaded of folk had to feel some goosebumps the first time they saw / heard her sing.  What got me was seeing Simon Cowell absolutely gobsmacked.

So anywhooo…Susan was back on the show this last week trying to get to the finals.  The producers did the smart thing and held her performance right until the very end of the show and although she started a big shaky, she ended up giving another terrific performance.  Here she is…

Yes, Ms. Boyle is a fantastic find and a wonderful singer of Andrew Lloyd Weber show tunes (which, sadly I am partial too as well)…but lost in all the hubbub around her, we have missed probably one of the most incredible, stupendous, original acts EVER!!!
