Zingerman’s is Gettin’ Their Bacon On!

I received this earlier in the week from my former circus and skating rat colleague Joanna (SHOUT OUT), now officially my “Land of Cheese” Correspondent.

I have lamented in previous posts about all these cool bacon related events and activities in other cities and was excited to see something like this virtually in my backyard.

Zingerman’s is a fantastic restaurant of some renown in Ann Arbor, MI.  Now typically I shun all things A2 as I am a Michigan State Spartan thru and thru, but for this I might have to venture into Wolverine territory.

On the heals of launching their newest book – “Zingerman’s Guide to Better Bacon” – on July 1st, they will be hosting this wonderful event – “Makin’ Better Bacon: A Bacon Dinner & Book Signing to Benefit Southern Foodways Alliance

To Do List…Revisited…

So last Friday I put forth my TDB To-Do List based on things I said I’d get to in previous blog posts but never followed through on.  I pledged to you, my 10′s of readers, that I would accomplish the items on this list over the course of the weekend or I’d eat vegetarian bacon.

REVIEW – Bacon Salt…

So finally I tried that little shaker of faux flavor…Bacon Salt.

salt

Bacon Salt was developed by two guys who had a dream to make everything taste like bacon.  From humble beginnings, they have turned their product and company into a million dollar business with multiple flavors of Bacon Salt, Baconnaise and recently Bacon Lip Balm.  It’s a true American entrepreneurial success story and I for one applaud them!

So anywho, back to the review… [Read more →]

YELP! Chicago..This Week it’s About Bacon!

Jen T. (SHOUT OUT) my TDB “correspondent” in Chicago and all around Hostess-With-The-Mostess just sent me this link to YELP! Chicago where this week the discussion is all about bacon and it’s new role as food superstar in everything we crave, including sweets.

Whether you fry, wrap, stuff, slice, chop or sprinkle it, bacon is indeed heavenly. But no longer is this candy of meats content to merely accompany boring ‘ol eggs on a breakfast plate – bacon has taken on new challenges and is forging unchartered porky frontiers.

So plan on visiting Chi-Town anytime soon, check out the conversation on where to go get your swine on!  Living in Chicago, join the conversation and help point the rest of us to your favorite bacon haunts!

Haven’t heard of Yelp!?  Where you should check it out.  It’s a site all about connecting people to local businesses. And yes there is a Yelp! Detroit…I checked ;-)

Better with Bacon – Candied Bacon

Candied Bacon???  YES!  Candied Bacon!

Over the last week I have seen a literal flood of posts about this on the Googleverse.  My favorite post is below, from the Rookie Cookie blog:

Candied Bacon:

There isn’t really a recipe for candied bacon. All you need is brown sugar and bacon. The only real catch is that this has to be made in the oven. The bacon needs to stay flat in order for the brown sugar to melt and get all sticky delicious.

From Russia with Bacon…

My little brother (I call him that because 1) he is my male sibling B) he is literally smaller than me and 3) he is younger than me) is currently finishing a two month stint working in Russia.  He sent me a nice email on Sunday wishing me a Happy Father’s Day AND took the time to file this report for TDB:

russia

Hey Mike! Everything is fine here. I attached some pics of Russian Bacon for your blog. Hopefully you can use them. It’s a traditional bacon, no spices, no smoky flavor, and no maple syrup flavor. Just little meat and a lot of very, very salty fat. It’s still good. The locals like to eat it raw. I can’t watch them when they do that, it just freaks me out. I’ve tried to tell them that they will get butt worms if they eat it raw, but they just dont care…

russia1

So there you go.  Streaky bacon in Russia is not smoked, just heavily salt cured with a high fat content and if you are not careful Russian people, it will give you butt worms if you continue to eat your pork raw.

Beware the butt worms…beware!

My First Father’s Day…

Today was a good day!  It wasn’t even about what I got or what we did (all of which were still really nice and greatly appreciated).  It was about a little moment when Lil’ Baird and I were alone today.

We put Lil’ down after getting back from a late breakfast and a long day of shopping thinking she’d sleep.  Better Half took that time to grab a quick nap too.  I was getting stuff together to go take care of the lawn, stopped to pop my head in Lil’s room and there she was wide awake.  Wanting Better Half to rest, I dropped my shoes, grabbed Lil’ and  popped down on the rocker.

For the next few minutes we just played there while I held her hands so she could stand on my lap.  She then braced herself against my chest and started touching my face, giggling every time she did and I giggled right along with her…

We started getting a little too loud, so I gobbled her up and we went downstairs so not to disturb mommy.  We laid out her toys and blankets on the floor and there we played for almost an hour an a half.  Just the two of us being goofy.

She started getting sleepy so I handed her lamb to her and bundled her up. Soon she was fast asleep on the floor next to me.  I just sat there and watched her little body take each breath and was overcome with the realization of what a blessing she truly is in our lives.

While there are a life full of memories yet to be made, this will be one that will never be forgotten!

Happy Father’s Day to me!
