Saturday Morning Video Funhouse…

More like Saturday Afternoon…so much of U-verse being “weatherproof”. Our broadband modem suffered a power surge last night and cable / internet was shut off til 10 minutes ago…

Anywho…enjoy this, my first Kevin Bacon reference. It only took 6 months.

I know when I get angry at the world, I just need to dance!

Have a great weekend.

A Little Bit of Soap…

Yesterday, in my post on bacon grease I briefly mentioned bacon soap.

Bacon soap??? REALLY???

Yupper Do! Here is video to prove it.

Should you have pets at home (or for that fact in your neighborhood) or are planning a trip to the zoo anytime soon, this might not be the soap for you…

Here are the step-by-step instructions if you are curious enough to try it!

Grease is the Word…

greaseinpan

It’s got groove it’s got meaning
Grease is the time, is the place is the motion
Grease is the way we are feeling…

Yes sir, over the last few days I have been reading a lot about bacon grease.  It was used to infuse an Old Fashioned, there was an ode to it’s virtue, I’ve seen it in several new recipes that I am considering for posting and EVEN for use in making bacon soap (more on that tomorrow).

That got me thinking…and that’s never a good thing…how should I go about trying to make some of these things while not keeping an old can of grease in the house (which would surely gross out and disturb Better Half)?

The answer, I think, courtesy of the Interwebs – Filter Chef! [Read more →]

Playing Catch Up…

todo

So I was leaving the house this morning and it hit me…I promised that I was going to try the Bacon Salt yesterday.

I didn’t.

I am so absent minded in my new fatherhood and old age!  By the time we got Lil’ Baird to bed, then made and ate dinner, I was settled in the couch catching up on magazines and the DVR.

That got me to thinking…what else have I talked about recently that I haven’t yet followed up on?

The start of the list looks like this:

  • Trying Bacon Salt
  • Review of the pre-cooked, packaged bacon that Better Half bought
  • Starting the “BLT from Scratch Challenge” by actually getting started!
  • Posting the bacon swag I recently received
  • Photos and review from breakfast at “Original Pancake House” in Chicago
  • Photos and video from trip to Moab, UT with TOMCAR
  • Getting to the butcher for some bacon to make for “Makin’ Bacon” reviews
  • Making ANYTHING for the “Test Kitchen” segment I was going to start

Now, I know that my ten’s of readers aren’t sitting on pins and needles waiting for this stuff.  In fact, you probably don’t even care (and I don’t blame you one bit).  But it just chaps my rear end that I’m not following through.  If I said previously that I would post something or write something or eat something then darn it all to H-E-double hockey sticks, I should do it.  Even though I am actually amazed that after six months, I’m still posting almost everyday, I need to develop better habits if I want this site to continue.

So my promise, no my VOW to you is to get through this list by the end of the weekend.  If I don’t live up to said promise, then I will buy and eat fake bacon…and I DO NOT want to do that!!

I Finally Broke Down…Bought Bacon Salt…

I was strolling through Kroger on Monday picking up some random items for dinner when I slid down the condiment lane and suddenly, there it was…

BACON SALT

Since the beginning of this blog six months ago, I have had friends ask me if I had tried this special seasoning.  To be honest, I meant to try this a long while back, but keep forgetting to look for it when I am at the market.  Beer, I never forget, but Bacon Salt just sort of falls from the memory, even when running a bacon themed blog…that was until Monday.

There it was on the shelf…in three different flavors.  Original, Peppered or Hickory.  I figured for this first foray into faux flavoring, I’d just stick with the Original.

So how was it?

I don’t know…because I placed it in the kitchen cabinet with the other seasonings when I got home and forgot I had it.  So I didn’t try it on Monday night or last night.  What I wanted to do was start slow, make some popcorn and sprinkle some on – so that is what I WILL DO tonite.

More tomorrow (if I remember)…

Better with Bacon – Bacon Chocolate Chip Cookies

It’s Tuesday…time for another simple, easy and yummy bacon recipe…

Now – for me, there is only ONE chocolate chip cookie recipe and that is the Nestle Tollhouse recipe!  But…what if I added bacon to that???  Hmmmmm??

If you are more adventourous than I and make your cookies from other recipes, then give this a try…looks like the key is candying the bacon first…

Ugh!

Okay – so the Wings lost and I was in Pittsburgh when it happened.

Ugh!

Oh well, when in Rome…

Your's Truly and Paul Rhoads with the "Cup"

I have to say, most people were really cool.  It was interesting to be in the heart of a city that just won a championship.  Detroit has won it’s share of titles over the years, but I’ve never been down in the thick of the action like Friday night. [Read more →]

How many more bottles were sold that night???

Being “Green” and Bacon Fat?

greaseJust how exactly does living a “green” lifestyle and bacon fat have in common?  Allow me to direct your attention to this column from the “Traverse City Record-Eagle“.

So what has all this got to do with bacon grease, you ask? Well, we are suppose to save and conserve our resources and I consider bacon grease a resource. Most of today’s homemakers throw the bacon grease in the garbage or (heaven forbid) down the disposal. How “green” is that?

It gets better!  Go read it…
