Saw this article today from this month’s “Details” magazine.  Here’s the headline:

HAS BACON MANIA GONE TOO FAR?

The only bad thing about the pork product is the cult of a$$h@les who’ve made it their god

UGH!  Really?

What the author doesn’t get is that this is ALL IN GOOD FUN!  While some may be more passionate than others, we’re all just a bunch of people that really dig on swine and are having fun with it.

There is a reason bacon themed products are being produced…they sell!  Why do they sell?  Because they’re fun and stupid and strange!!  Maybe a little like the people who are buying all of this stuff…(I’m raising my hand).  There’s a reason for the rise in artisanal bacon…it’s GOOD!  There’s a reason chefs are using it in all sorts of great, creative ways…because it makes things YUMMY! 

You know…if he didn’t just essentially call me an a$$h@le, I wouldn’t be mad.  It’s not like I haven’t been called one before, but at least that has been when I have deserved it!  This is kinda like an attack. In my view, anyone who just singularly lumps people together and then calls them a$$h@les just because they might not “get” the reason those people like something is the real a$$h@le.

So why then Michael are you giving credence to this article if the author so offended you?  I mean come on, it’s “Details“, how seriously can you take it? Well because 1) it IS an article about bacon and B) there are some good little nuggets hidden inside like:

“It’s all things meat, concentrated down to one strip of cured pork, and that strip functions as a middle finger to extend towards all the health cranks, stroller moms, and progressive puritans who try to prevent men from doing what they want most. Bacon is a Thai brothel on an egg plate.”

KA-POW!

and

Silver calls the meat “a gateway drug for vegetarians.”

I love that line.

So this needs just a little set up.

A while back, I reviewed some Gusto’s bacon I picked up at Hiller’s Market.  I had never heard of Gusto’s before and only found out about it when I was pulling my weekly “Goin’ to the Market” post.

It was a real pleasant surprise and some terrific packaged bacon.

Well, it seemed that my little post and the way I tagged it suddenly pushed my up to #1 in organic search when you would type “Gusto’s Bacon” in the google machine (right now I am 4th).

Anywho, a few weeks back I got a real nice comment on the site from Joe who worked at Gusto’s.  He thanked me for my post and said he would like to send me a t-shirt and hat.  COOL, my first swag courtesy of this little blog thingy.
