BLTfSC…Go Garden Go!

It’s been three weeks since my last update on my progress with “The BLT from Scratch Challenge” and those three weeks have been like watching paint dry.  It’s really a waiting game this month as the tomato and lettuce plants continue to grow.

Here’s a shot of the garden as of last Sunday:

The corn has taken off nicely…and on the other side, you can see the MUTANT cherry tomato plant that is essentially taking over the entire garden!!  We have had to trim the plant twice already, just to allow sunlight to get to other plants on that end of the garden, including my beefsteak tomatoes.  I have no idea what has caused this little plant to go crazy, I just hope we get a ton of fruit off it.

But I digress…

This is where we stand just six weeks from the Labor Day deadline…dsc01303

Three nice tomatoes shaping up on my beefsteak plant.  Now that the cherry plant has been pruned, hopefully my stunted little beefsteak will get to growing!

Here’s how the lettuce has fared.  It’s looking real good.  These plants were from seed and are sitting between the corn, so I am actually happy with their progress.  This picture was after I got in there and removed some of the plants to give space for the lettuce to grow.  The directions said to plant seeds 1″ apart, but that you needed 8″ around each plant for growing space.

The remaining plants that I pulled out, I am trying to grow in a separate container.  I just couldn’t throw them out…

They look a little sad after the replanting, but hopefully they’ll perk right up this week with some sun and water.  We’ll see if I can save them.

That’s the “L” and the “T”, what about the “B”?

Well, everything that I have been reading so far says that the pork needs to only cure for about two weeks, so it won’t be for about another three before I head down to Eastern Market in Detroit and get my slab of pork belly.  I’ve also started looking up some interesting bread and mayo recipes.  I want to do something a little different and I think I have found some interesting flavors to play with.

I’m comin’ for ya Ruhlman!

You’d better get some chicken wire over those or the rabbits/deer are gonna make it a nice Bacon sandwich.

That is why Better Half planted marigolds around the perimeter…supposedly they help ward off those little pests.
