Top Chef – Veggie Surprise…

Okay – I’ve been talkin’ about catching up with my “Top Chef” viewing and posting, but I just can’t seem to set any time to write about the last three episodes that I’ve missed.  I’ve literally had five pages of notes that keep getting moved from home to work to home to work…

So executive decision time, I’m just going to start fresh with last night’s show, “Meat Natalie“, then quickly touch on the last three “lost” episodes (Dinner Party / Pigs and Pinot / Restaurant Wars).

Let’s finally do this thing!

  • Quickfire themed to television shows and having to create a TV dinner – AWE to the SOME.  This was a fun idea, even if the shows they picked where simple to put a menu behind.
  • Kevin, Soprano’s, Meatballs…I mean come on, how could he not win? Cool that his recipe will become a frozen dinner through Schwan’s.
  • Also liked the bait and switch for the Elimination challenge with “You get to cook at CraftSteak” but then BAM, it’s a vegetarian challenge.  I don’t usually like veggie challenges (cause I’m a carnivore), but this was interesting
  • DO NOT agree with keeping Natalie Portman on the judges panel instead of the guest chef?  Didn’t see Penn & Teller at the final table and I don’t care that she’s a self described “foodie”
  • Good for Eli, he stepped up his game in both of these challenges.  Nice to see him get an attaboy.
  • KEVIN!!!  Clean sweep!  He is killin’ it…
  • Boy Mike V. is really looking like a total prick.  His comments after losing to Kevin were just so self-absorbed and petty.  Get over your technique and realize that simple food, cooked well and taste good, will kick your little technical butt everytime!  There is no questioning that he is talented and I am sure all great chefs probably believe they are king sh!t, but SERIOUSLY!!
  • Speaking of pricks, good bye Mike I.  He never stepped up his cooking to the level that he “thought” he should be at.  I think it’s funny that everyone keep ragging on Robin, but she’s still there!!  She’s got some wins under her belt people.  Yes, she’s made a ton of mistakes and been in the bottom almost every time, but SHE IS STILL THERE.  Just to think you wouldn’t be going home because she’s standing next to you, very shortsighted.
  • All that being said, of the remaining cheftestants Robin’s got to go next week.
  • Jen – what a disappointing showing.  What’s going on in her head?  Is it all fatigue as Tom alluded too?  Come on woman, we know you can kill it, so get back at it!  We’ve seen in every season a talented chef who “should” make it to the finals blow it early, don’t do it!!!

Now, quickly, thoughts about the last three; “Restaurant Wars” (RW), “Pigs and Pinot” (PP) and “Dinner Party” (DP):

  • (RW) Loved, loved, loved the blindfolded progressive Quickfire challenge.  I don’t think that was ever on TC before…it should be a keeper moving forward!
  • (RW) I also liked the double or nothing with the High Stake’s QF.  While I still don’t like the awarding of $$, this was a nice twist, especially since that team lost the Elimination challenge.
  • (RW) Other than that, I thought “Restaurant Wars” was a total dud.  Just no heat to it.  Did get a small smile when Robin had a well regarded dessert and how the rest of that team really didn’t want to hear that.
  • (PP) Are you kidding, marrying pigs and Pinot???  Oh my goodness, how awesome of an event and challenge!!!
  • (PP) Did you really think anyone but Kevin would win this…the dude’s got a pig tattoo. I’m really loving this guy more and more each week which is funny cause I didn’t like how he came off in the very first episode.
  • (DP) Seriously, the worst episode of the season.  The slot machine Quickfire made no sense and the Elimination challenge with having to cook at the apartment for Tyler Florence and a bunch of Macy’s shilling chefs, UGH!
  • (DP) Jen and Kevin as a duo…that’s not a fair fight!  I’d say the same about the brothers on the same team but I really don’t think they could work together well (you could see the strain between them in RW)
  • Through all the episodes I am really getting sick of everyone slammin’ Robin.  Look, I don’t really like her that much, but these guys are just way to frickin’ rude!  Oh, and she still finds a way to make it another week…
  • Not a single problem with who went home each week either.  You could tell it was their time.  From the start of the season there was a top tier, a middle tier and a bottom tier and that cream is rising!

As always, Tom Colicchio’s take…from last night, RW, PP and DP.
