Fast Food Friday – Sonic

Over that last 10 years or so, as I was watching basic cable programming, I would see a commercial for a joint called Sonic?  Why the heck was this burger joint advertising with a national cable buy when they had NO stores in a whole bunch of states?  The answer, they were softening us up!

Michigan got it’s first Sonic just over a year ago in St. Clair Shores and this week, they opened up a new location in the heart of Oakland County.  It, like the first store opening, made the paper and I believe a TV outlet or two.

What’s so special about Sonic?  I think it’s the novelty of the drive-in concept. Some may say it’s their 168,894 drink flavor combinations.  Other may just be big fans of tots (more on that later).  Whatever it is, it has developed a following.

This was my first trip ever to Sonic and probably won’t be my last.

Enough jibber-jabbin’, let’s get down to bacon business. For the “Fast Food Friday” test, we ordered both the bacon cheeseburger AND the BLT.  Let’s start with the BLT…

Jam On It, Jam On It, I Said Jam, Jam-Jam, Jam On It…

Since I saw Kevin on “Top Chef ” whip up some Bacon Jam, I have been searching the interwebs for a recipe.  Today, via one of my geek blogs, I came across this…

bacon-jam-1

Made by Skillet, a street food – mobile concept restaurant out of Seattle.  They buy old airstream trailers, convert them to commercial kitchens then pull up to locations and make some real good bistro style food.  Too cool for skool Seattle…

Anyhoo, this from the Bacon Jam product page on their website:

…we take a big bunch of really really good bacon, and render it down…add a bunch of spices..onions, etc..and let it simmer for about 6 hours, give it a quick puree, and blast chill and you have bacon jam..

Oh my!

It ain’t cheap…an 8 oz. jar costs $17.00.  Yikes!  That does not include shipping.  Even still, I am thinking that I have to try this…

ED NOTE: All apologies to Newcleus, but I thought that was a funny headline.  However, now I can’t get the song out of my head.

ebay Find…1974 Wacky Packages

wacky

This one is from the 10th series of Wacky Packages, released in 1974.

Man I love these!!  This image available with BUY NOW option for $4.29.  Yes, one sticker, $4.29.  This does NOT include the extra $1.00 for shipping.

Quick aside, when I was working with Fathead, I got to spend a weekend at the Geppi Entertainment Museum in Baltimore where I got to see their framed original, uncut sheets of Wacky Packages.  Nerd heaven!!

Everything Old is New Again…

A few weeks back, we were introduced to Tactical Bacon, fully cooked bacon in a can.  I even purchased a can of TacBac and it now resides in a place of honor on my desk so that I shall be prepared in the event of the coming Zombie Apocalypse.

Color me surprised when I found this on the interwebs courtesy of Dave’s Cupboard

Three ounces of pressed, pre-fried bacon…in the shape of a small brick!  Glorious!

Dave even found a 1963 article about the amazing invention of freeze-dried food in “Sports Illustrated”.

This was his find, so if you’d like to read the article (it’s quite interesting and funny at the same time), then head to Dave’s site and click his link.

OMG…it’s the Porkgasm…

Way back in the beginning of March, when this little blog was just starting out and finding our way, our bacon news gathering skills where still in their infancy.  That is the only reason I can come up with for NOT SEEING THIS SOONER!

I dare say it puts the Bacon Explosion to shame.  If only for it’s shear creativity!

Just in time for dinner, behold the Porkgasm:

I won’t even try to explain what has been done here…just direct you to their website where you can see how this little piggy was created.

Allow me to being a slow clap……..NOW

Yummy Pictures…with Bacon!

This site has been around for a while, but I am just discovering it’s near hypnotic spell…

It’s called SCANWICHES and it’s concept is so simple…buy/make a sandwich, cut it in half and then scan it!

I was half tempted to do this with the burgers in our “Fast Food Friday” segment, but then I’d just feel like a massive hack.  So instead, I found a few bacon sandwiches that I thought I’d share with you.

Better with Bacon – Bacon Caramel Apple

Apples and pig ALWAYS go together!!  So in that spirit, today we feature a nice twist to that seasonal staple the caramel apple.

Sadly, there was no photo of this wonderful treat, so you’ll have to suffer with this incredibly poor artist rendition…
