BTV – Man V. Food in the D Review…
The Detroit episode of “Man V. Food” aired this past Wednesday. I just got around to watching it on the old DVR last night and I got to say, it was a decent showing.

They started with American and Lafayette Coney. I guess that is appropriate as both really are mainstays and essential tourist destinations. When you really think about it, they are pretty much the only true food “destination” in the city. Sure there are great bars and some terrific restaurants, but if you want a unique Detroit experience oddly enough you take them for coneys.
I’ve had both, but I’ve never done a side by side or (dog by dog) comparison. I just might have to do that next time.
The next stop was Slows Bar B que!! VERY HAPPY they got some love!! We also got a good bacon shout out as Adam tried their triple threat pork sandwich made of applewood bacon, roasted pork and slab ham. Mouth watering even as I write this. If you have never been to Slows – GO NOW!!! It is that freakin’ good.
Finally it was out to the burbs where Adam tackled the Guinness Book burger at Mallie’s. I got to tell you, my stomach did a little turn when you see how this thing is made. Here we had another bacon shout-out as the burger includes 4 lbs. of bacon. Yes, 4 lbs.! thing is you never even see it as it gets smothered by the other ingredients and the huge bun.
I won’t tell you how he tackles the giant burger, just that I thought it was a decent gimmick.
The problem is, for me, that it never really felt like a standard “Man V. Food” episode. In hindsight, I don’t think that we have truly gluttonous places, nor do we have “institutions” with crazy food challenges. So the whole episode just felt off to me. Even so, I think the “D” looked good!
Over on the “Man V. Food” site, there’s bonus footage of Adam visiting the Heidelberg Project and his vlog post about his shoot in Detroit (with extra shout out to Slows).
If you missed it, the Detroit episode will re-air on
