Top Chef – The Strip…

So last week Top Chef aired some stupid “where are they now” type dinner party / conversation with past contestants. BORING!!! and disappointing as they didn’t make any sort of programming note after the previous week’s episode. So last night’s was the first new ep in two weeks and that is on the heals of their last break in episodes…what’s up Bravo scheduling department??? Way to kill momentum.
Anywhooo…comments on this week’s show after the jump.
- PADMA AND NIGELLA LAWSON IN BED PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!! Now that was a Quickfire!
- The breakfast in bed concept was interesting. I think each of the chefs dished were quite representative of who they were.
- Jen – chipped beef (aka SOS)…ugh. However Eli’s playing around with the reuben concept for breakfast was very cool and I have no problems with why he won.
- The V brothers just seem to over complicate dishes. Mike especially is really annoying in his assistance that his food is better surely based on technical difficulty. Dude – JUST MAKE YUMMY FOOD!!! That’s why Kevin is always so strong*
- Elimination Challenge was to come up with a dish inspired by a casino on the Vegas strip. Neat concept but what the heck was up with the casino selections?? I went back, there were only six knives to pull so they consciously chose those six. I mean come on – Circus, Circus?? I’m trying to see if they were all owned by the same group but I don’t think they are. Just a weird selection when you consider all of the places along the strip.
- Kevin cooked fish…wow. Is that a first this season? And he knocked it out of the park! It seemed like a real delicate dish, especially with the tomato water finish. Totally different side of him.
- Michael’s re-imagined chicken wing was the first thing he cooked this season that I really wanted to try.
- Jen has really hit a wall. I actually wrote that note down and not more than 5 minutes later, Toby said the same thing. What happened girl??? You had so much promise. Get it together and represent!
- I am so sick of Top Chef holding these parties that the cheftestants have to cater and then having EVERYONE arrive at the same time. Seriously??? Can we bring a little “real worldism” into these things a bit?!? I know they are out to manufacture tension, but it would be nice to see the chef’s interact and really sell themselves a bit more (bringing needed personality to some of these chefs)
- Nigella could be a full time judge, PLEASE!!!! Get rid of Toby and if you don’t bring Ted Allen back, GET HER!!! She was wickedly honest and got to tell you, really easy to look at…hubba, hubba.
- Now Robin – it was so time for her to go and her showing throughout the episode really set the stage. From the “I wasn’t proud of what I did today” comment to Nigella during the Quickfire judging to her pointing out to the judges her bad sugar during the Elimination Challenge. I’m not gonna hate on her like everyone in that house, but she really did seem out classed all season long.
As always – here is a link to Tom’s take…
* the preview for next week’s show had a talking head of Mike dogging Kevin’s cooking style and menu choices…I heard that and seriously wanted to throw something at the TV. You a$$…I am officially starting an A.B.M. (anyone by Mike) campaign.
