Fast Food Friday – Fatburger

Fatburger!

For a long time – it was just a mythical place out in California.  Then on a business trip in LA, I had my first.  I remember it being good, just sort of crossed it off my internal checklist and then moved on.

Well color me shocked when a Fatburger opened in Michigan.  There is only one store in this entire state and it is literally only 5 miles from me.  This must be fate…

Yet my normal driving pattern never takes me near it.  So on Christmas Eve, while out playing Santa Dad, I made a trip to remind myself about this great little place and officially give that bacon a try!

So let’s head inside!So here you go – first thing you see…

Yup, that is it!  I love menus like this.  The fewer items on a menu, the better the food should be.  Focus on what you do well! I picked up the Large size Fatburger (8 oz.) with bacon and cheese.  Bacon, cheese and egg are extra costing $0.99 each. 

These burgers are made to order, so don’t expect a tray with food seconds from your order.  That burger’s gotta cook, so fill up your drink and have a seat.

One nice touch that I always liked…at their drink station they have a container of hard candies.  Trust me, a couple of those come in handy after eating one of these burgers (and I say that in a good way).

After about 10 – 15 minutes this was delivered to my table…

Good color and check out that thickness.  This is a real slice of bacon.

Cooked a little unevenly…I like that. It means this was cooked on site, a fact I confirmed with the cook.  They fry up the bacon on the flat top.  Music to my ears!

A lament of mine during these “Fast Food Fridays” is that the burgers I have been ordering (specific menu items that featured bacon) all seemed to have so much meat that the bacon was overwhelmed when eating the sandwich.  I thought it was going to be the case here as this really is a surprisingly big burger and they throw a bunch of other good stuff on it.  Surprise, surprise as I took each bite and could actually feel and in most cases TASTE the bacon on the burger. 

The bacon itself was quite good.  I could actually get some sweetness out of it, something missing in the mostly salty fast food fare that I’ve been used to.  Good chew with a snap as you bit into it.

I walked out with a filled cup of coke, some hard candies in my pocket and a smile on my face.  This was an enjoyable little meal.  I’ll consider it an early Christmas present to me.  Well done Fatburger.
