Fast Food Friday – Gettin’ My Salad On at Wendy’s…
Welcome back to “Fast Food Friday“! It’s been awhile…
For the newbies, this feature started with me comparing bacon and bacon burgers at various fast food chains surrounding my home and former office. We were on a roll there for a while but then I ran out of fast food places and “Fast Food Friday’s“ went dormant.
Well bust out the tray liners cause I’m back baby! But this week, we’re checking out a salad. A Salad??? Let me explain…
In the spirit of full exposure - a few weeks back I get this mysterious email saying that this person had a $10 Wendy’s gift card for me if I was willing to try one of their new premium salads. Not knowing if this was a scam or not I sent the email back. Fast forward a week and BAM, gift card in the mail! SWEET!!!
Being a man of my word, I took my card and went to get a salad…
So I get in the restaurant and look over the menu…
Apple Pecan Chicken
Spicy Chicken Caesar
Baja
BLT Cobb
Well there you go…only one with bacon so sign me up.
I get back to the table, crack open the case and here we are…
Okay…
First, I don’t dig on egg so I scraped all that off.
Then I had to make some additional cuts to the pre-sliced chicken.
Then I had to crumble up the bacon because as you can see they just dropped two slices over the salad.
So I’m a good 5 minutes invested in this salad before even taking a bite…UGH!
But then I get everything worked out and I got to tell you, it was a pretty good little salad.
It was a true mixed green that was crisp and bright. Tomatoes and blue cheese crumble each had really solid flavor. The avocado ranch dressing they serve with this salad was very tasty (so that means in no way good for you, so moderation people). Chicken was okay, moist but still processed. Finally the bacon…nice color, good flavor and crispness. After I torn the strips apart and tossed the salad, I ended up with just about a bite of bacon on each forkful.
I got to tell you, I was really pleasantly surprised by this salad and actually felt full after eating it. If the rest of the family of salads is like this one, then Wendy’s jumped in the front of the line when it comes to QSR salads.
My quibbles…I wish this was treated as a chopped salad. Dice the chicken and bacon, make it easier for to eat. You can’t really do much slicing and dicing with the plastic tableware. Also, just throwing two slices of bacon on the salad just looks really weak.
Am I being too nice considering this was a free lunch? I don’t think so because I really did like this salad and would buy it again with my own money.
I’m not breaking out the BRS (Bacon Rating System) for this because I’ll be revisiting Wendy’s to finally rate the Bacon Deluxe next week.
