BEST OF TDB | Comet Cafe – Is This Bacon Heaven?

We are away on vacation until July 12th.  Until then, please enjoy these selected “Best Of” posts.  This was originally published 7/3/2009.

Another great surprise from the Food Network last night.  I was catching up on the DVR and had a “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” ep that I decided to burn through.

The first restaurant featured was a bacon lovers dream – the Comet Cafe in Milwaukee.

Better Half was on the couch with me and even she asked me to hit rewind a couple times to see if we could duplicate his recipes.  God bless him, he was dropping bacon fat in everything!!

Again, I wish I could share video with you, but I’ve already documented my frustration with the Food Network’s and their lack of understanding “sharing”, so allow me to point you to this interview with the head chef of the Comet Cafe.

Here’s how it starts…

Hunger-smashing comfort food, an intimidatingly cool rock star waiting staff, and a cozy atmosphere are among the many calling cards for Comet Cafe. But it’s all window dressing next to the East side restaurant’s real star attraction, bacon. There’s the free bowls of bacon every Sunday. There’s the zesty bacon pancakes. There’s the bacon that comes in every bloody mary, one of the city’s best.  For a dollar we’ll put bacon on anything, says head chef Adam Lucks…

Yes, you read that – FREE BOWLS OF BACON EVERY SUNDAY!  Also I love the for a buck line…classic.

This place now goes on my list.

Gettin’ Ready to Blow This Joint…

I am packing today for my “Mancation” to Belize and Guatemala.

A bunch of us turned the big 4-0 this year and are paying for the privilege of going to another country and sit at a bar all day.

I’ll be gone until July 12th, so you kids will have to watch yourselves.

To keep you company, for the first time ever here at TDB, we’re going “Best Of” until I get back.

Have a terrific 4th of July and we’ll see you on the 13th!

Bacon Pic of the Day – The Ron Swanson Meat Mosaic…

More meat art today, this from NBC.com.

Okay, no actual meat was used like in yesterday’s masterpiece AND Ron’s image is ghosted under all those glorious meat photos…even still, it’s “appropriately cool”.

Bacon Pic of the Day – The Clogfather…

There, I just saved you from having to read the original post comments ;-)

The Foo Fighter’s Fight for Food…

Not just any food like “promoter pasta” but real food, good food…so of course that means bacon!

Their latest concert rider comes in at 52 pages.  Part seven features their “Field Guide To Food Coloring Book And Activity Pages“.  I’ve pulled together two pages that may be of interest to the FoTDB, but strongly encourage you to witness the entire section in all it’s glory.  Also, I’d suggest attempting the word search…it’s a little more complicated than you may think and it includes a “hidden message” for all those promoters out there.

I’m printing the Dave Grohl cover especially for Lil’ to color.  Think of the street cred she’s going to get at daycare…

Boise’s Bacon Bike…

artist rendition…couldn’t find actual photo on file.

Boise’s just got a heck of a lot cooler in my mind. Not quite yet ready to plan a trip but…

From the Boise Weekly:

John Berryhill’s brunch/lunch venture Bacon is offering free delivery in downtown Boise on its Bacon Bike. Now you can pork out on dishes like the Kurobuta bacon mac or the chevre bechamel-filled bacon lasagna without leaving your desk. Apparently, pigs don’t need to fly when they’ve got a slick pair of wheels.

Okay, two things here  a) There is a restaurant named Bacon (menu link here – it is glorious)  and 2) they deliver food to you on their “bacon bike”.

Berryhill in Boise bringing bacon on his bike!  My new favorite tongue twister.

annnnnnnddddddd…We are Back! Bacon Turkey Anyone?

So first – thanks for your patience.  I just had a ton to get done and no time to tend to bacon these last few days.

Out and about this weekend, the fam and I did a little shopping.  Stopped by one of our favorite markets, Westborn, and came across this at the deli counter…

Okay – so shoot me, bad camera photo.

Bottom of the list – “Bacon Lover’s Turkey” from Dietz & Watson.  Turkey breast wrapped in bacon and roasted.  I wasn’t even the one who found this, it was all Better Half.  She called me over, popped a taste in my mouth and suddenly we’ve got a pound of it in our basket.

I got to tell you, find a market that serves Dietz & Watson and get yourself some of this!

Bacon Ipsum…

I’ve been working on a new web site for work.  There are times when we need to populate a page with some text so we reach for some standard Ipsum.  Not anymore my friends!  Now all my fake placeholder text will be from Bacon Ipsum!

Head to their site, set the number of paragraphs you need, select if you want “all meat” or “meat and filler” and hit the “give me bacon” button!

“All Meat”?  It looks like this:

Bacon pork belly pork jowl shankle. Biltong ball tip short ribs, drumstick beef ribs tri-tip brisket fatback shankle shoulder beef. Jerky spare ribs hamburger, shank ham bresaola pastrami flank pig andouille shoulder. Bresaola beef tri-tip strip steak ribeye. Andouille drumstick boudin, pig jowl beef hamburger tenderloin tail chuck spare ribs shoulder sirloin bacon ground round. Rump flank ball tip corned beef turkey. Short loin bacon pork chop, tenderloin jowl t-bone pancetta tongue.

“Meat and Filler”, you’ll get something like this:

Nostrud pork anim fugiat, sunt ullamco quis occaecat nulla salami voluptate. Commodo anim ut, mollit chicken aliquip t-bone elit tongue tail. Consequat do turkey beef ribs. Bacon t-bone cillum, mollit elit esse magna dolore ut pork loin. Chuck sunt biltong pork chop venison, qui exercitation dolore corned beef rump eiusmod shank sed. Excepteur proident culpa, cillum tempor drumstick tri-tip exercitation adipisicing pariatur headcheese veniam. Sed ex short loin, fugiat sirloin aliqua chicken pork belly exercitation ham commodo velit.

Whatever you select, make sure you click that last option, “Start with ‘Bacon ipsum dolor sit amet…” as EVERYTHING should start with bacon!
