TEST KITCHEN – Maple French Toast & Bacon Cupcakes

 cake_fin

Yesterday’s “Better with Bacon” featured recipe, the Maple French Toast & Bacon Cupcake, came from the “Food Network Magazine” and provided yet another take on what is becoming a trend in the dessert world - sweet & savory desserts featuring bacon!

When I was a kid, I used to love to bake: Nestle Tollhouse Cookies, Skywalker Crunchies (I know…nerd), cakes, brownies, etc.  I need to say upfront that it has been quite some time since I actually baked anything but this looked so good that I had to try.

What I didn’t expect was the amount of time it took to make these.  The recipe said 40 minutes, but turns out that was just the baking time.  I started this project at 9:15 pm and didn’t finish until 11:30 pm.  Granted, my lack of current experience may have hindered me, but making stuff from scratch like this takes a while (that did also include clean up as the cupcakes were in the oven).

So when I start to make anything, I like to have all the ingredients pulled: [Read more →]

Better with Bacon – Candied Bacon

Candied Bacon???  YES!  Candied Bacon!

Over the last week I have seen a literal flood of posts about this on the Googleverse.  My favorite post is below, from the Rookie Cookie blog:

Candied Bacon:

There isn’t really a recipe for candied bacon. All you need is brown sugar and bacon. The only real catch is that this has to be made in the oven. The bacon needs to stay flat in order for the brown sugar to melt and get all sticky delicious.

Now – for me, there is only ONE chocolate chip cookie recipe and that is the Nestle Tollhouse recipe!  But…what if I added bacon to that???  Hmmmmm??

If you are more adventourous than I and make your cookies from other recipes, then give this a try…looks like the key is candying the bacon first…

REVIEW – Man Bait, Maple Bacon Lollipop

It’s funny how the interwebs work.  I followed a trail last week that led me to Das Foods.  They are the makers of “Man Bait“, a maple bacon lollipop.

man20bait20composite

All of their lollipops (they have four unique flavors) are made with natural ingredients. The “Man Bait” pop’s ingredients include: sugar, rice syrup, bacon bits, salt, natural smoke flavor, natural bacon flavor and natural maple flavor.  That’s it!

Why wouldn’t I order one?  Heck, why wouldn’t I order 10?!  And that is just what I did.

My box arrived 2 days after ordering (nice turn around) and I could not wait to eat one…but I did…almost a whole week.  Why?  Because I wanted to share the experience with my 10’s of readers and I never had a camera with me when I wanted to eat one.  If I continue this blogging thing, then I have to invest in a phone that has a decent camera feature!

Anyhoo…last night was the night and after dinner, I had my dessert… [Read more →]

How Many Licks?

So I was bouncin’ through a bunch of  my bacon Google Alerts (look at that fine example of aliteration right there) and came across a link to this post from Gizmodo about the author’s trip to The Candy Expo.

Before I go further with the relevant bacon news, let me just say “Candy Expo” – hells yeah!  I have got to find a way to one day get into that show!  There are certain trade events that I have always wanted to attend (like CES) and some that I have crossed off the list (Toy Fair).  This goes right to the top baby!!  Maybe I can get a press pass next year on behalf of TDB???  Hmmmm.

Anywho – this is what I wanted to draw your attention too…

Dessert…

I seriously think that the fates have been conspiring to get this blog going…as continued proof, I finally got to reading my copy of this week’s TIME Magazine” and look what’s featured…(Al – thanks for the link).

Two things from the article:

1) “But the real mass-market shift started two summers ago, when Vosges Haut-Chocolat put out the $7.50 Mo’s Bacon Bar. “I was a vegetarian at the time,” says owner Katrina Markoff, who trained at Le Cordon Bleu, “but I decided to make an exception for bacon.” To her shock, the bacon bar became her best-selling item and is now available in more than 200 stores.”

A vegetarian who makes an exception for bacon!!  KA-FREAKIN’-POW!!  Mirrors my life as I completely corrupted my non-pork eating wife into loving bacon AND this is the exact candy bar that Better Half  got me for Christmas!

THE Bacon & Chocloate Bar

I have still resisted temptation to rip into these, but I am thinking that there is now no better time to try it and let ya’ll know just what it’s like.  I gots to be topical, right?

2)  The quote in the article from chef Jerome Chang, “Bacon is just more sellable because people mix it up with their pancakes and their syrup and they’re used to that. Plus, people like bacon a lot.”  Damn Straight!!!  ;-)

They have 5 recipes online for bacon desserts…interesting…in the name of content, might have to cook some of those up.

In the meantime I think that this evening, I shall break open that Bacon Chocolate Bar…stay turned!
