Happy Birthday to Us! The Daily Bacon is 3…

Wow! Three years! I can honestly tell you that I never thought I could do this for this long, let alone that there would be enough bacon content to keep going. It’s been one mans labor of love and I THANK ALL OF YOU who have checked us out over the years and keep coming back for more! You are the reason I keep writing!
January 1, 2009 – my first post. How the time has flown and the site has continued to grow! As has been custom during our last two birthdays, allow me to share some quick site stats with you:

So There Was This Contest…
and I lost.
Thanks to everyone who voted for “The Daily Bacon” in the Detroit “Most Valuable Blogger” competition. I truly do appreciate your support (no really, seriously, I do)!
So to whom did I lose? To a young woman by the name of Sarah who maintains a blog called “Crazy Random Happenstance“. Congratulations to her! Hey, us bloggers got to stick together…especially those of us who just do this out of “love”. So much respect.
Am I bitter? Yeah, a little, but I was a bitter old man to begin with! Also, any contest like this that doesn’t actually post votes, either real time or at the end of the competition, is suspect. Look, I’m in marketing, I know how stuff like this works.
Oh well, at least I’ve got bacon (and all of you who hang around this joint)

Um…Guess that Denny’s Post was Pretty Popular…
What you are looking at is a graph of TDB daily site traffic. You can see that after I posted about Denny’s “Baconalia” yesterday, my site visits essentially doubled. That would have easily made yesterday the highest trafficked day on my little corner of the googleverse.
But then came today.
Um, wow!
Guess there are a lot of people into Denny’s…oh, and bacon.
So hi to all you folks just finding us, thanks for stopping by, don’t be a stranger.

Here I Go Googlin’ Myself…
Sittin’ on the couch, trying to decide what I was goin’ to write about tonite when I decide to drop “bacon” into the google machine and hit enter…
About 39,600,000 results (0.12 seconds)
Holy!
Okay, I wonder, how deep would I have to go to find the first mention of “The Daily Bacon” in these results?
So I click on the 2, then the 3, then the 4, then the 5…you get the picture.
Finally, this…
Page 23! Crud…that’s deep.
But then I started thinking, yes it’s page 23 but that really means that I was the 224th most relevant thing on the interwebs when someone typed in the generic term “bacon”. That is 224 out of 39,600,000!!
KA-POW!!
So I’ve got that goin’ for me…which is nice.
Hope y’all had a great day!

My New Brother/s in Bacon…
All, I would like to introduce you to the Republic of Bacon. Republic of Bacon meet my 10′s of readers…
I received a Facebook email sometime back from some folks who were creating a new bacon website. They asked if they could pull from my feed, share content, yada, yada, yada…
Flattered that I gained what I thought was reader 11 (when I say 10′s, I mean that literally 10 people read this dinky little site) I just sort of smiled a little and went about my life.
Then came a second emails months later. Paraphrasing – Hey Mike, s’up? The sites up, thanks for letting us include you.
Site? What site? Oh yeah that’s right, those guys. Well good for them.
So curiously I entered the address into the google machine and…
HOLY CRAP!!!
This just destroys my little sideshow. I’m just barely getting by with 3rd grade CSS / WordPress skillz and here these wacky Canadians come in and drop the bomb.
This site really looks fantastic, is engaging and fun. Some areas are light on content right now, but hey, they are just starting out AND when you have gone through this much work already, I’m happy to cut you so slack.
Thank you for including me guys! If you ever feel like designing another site (slowing raising hand)…
Click on the screen shot above and go check them out!

International Bacon Day…Sept. 5
That’s right, tomorrow is officially the second FIFTH annual “International Bacon Day“.

Logo made by me, with apologies to the United Nations
International Bacon Day is held on the Saturday before the US Labor Day holiday (the first Monday of Sept.). Last year Bacon Day was celebrated in the US, Australia, Canada, South Africa, Switzerland, and the UK.
International Bacon Day was the brain child of Alexa and the Bacon Boys– a group of bloggers from Colorado. This from their website:
Bacon Day is open to everyone. Vegetarians can have fake-con (soy bacon) and religious objectors non-pork bacon (I suggest turkey bacon).
Bacon Day is a day of Bacon… think Iron Chef but all day and the secret ingredient is Bacon. Breakfast traditionally consists of bacon waffles, with a side of bacon, and any other concoctions thought up. Throughout the day there are showings of Kevin Bacon movies and any other movies with leading roles given to pigs, e.g. Babe, Piglet’s Big Adventure. Lunch must have BLTs and there are snacks around and slices of bacon everywhere. Dinner is a fight for your food quite literally. It is more a tasting of all things bacon and everyone wants a taste. Due to the vast quantities of bacon cooked, the grill outside is the best bet. If you are invited to a Bacon Day celebration, it is traditional to bring something to eat (of course containing bacon) which can be made there if the host allows, and drink (which may or may not include bacon).
While we here at The Daily Bacon have set aside select Sunday’s (say that five times fast) as BACON SUNDAY, let us heed this call to arms my bacon lovin’ brothers and sisters and rejoice in the sweet, smokey taste of pork tomorrow!

Have a great weekend!
