Fast Food Friday – White Castle
This week’s adventure in fast food bacon takes us to White Castle!
To be honest, I had no idea they even had a bacon cheeseburger. I have made many a stop to the Castle during my day but I’ve pretty much always just got the same thing (a sack of 6 and fries – yes, six) and never even bothered to read the menu.
It was strange actually walking into the restaurant as my typical White Castle experience is a late night drive thru run.
With expectations low I ordered two bacon cheeseburgers and two bacon double cheeseburgers and got to to eating…
While waiting for my sack o’ burgers I looked through the window and what should I see?
It was their container of bacon…and I started to worry. It looked just like all the typical precooked, thin sliced stuff that I’ve seen along this journey. Certainly this couldn’t bode well…
Oh well, we are here, I’ve ordered, it is lunch time and I need content…so time to eat. Let’s dig into that bag!
HA! So here is the double and the bacon is almost as thick as the burger itself! BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
Let’s open it up!
Judging by it’s looks, it’s definitely the precooked stuff. My disappointment continues as I notice that for bacon it’s just one slice folded in half. Given the size of these burgers on slice would be enough to provide 100% coverage, if split in two and laid out correctly, but still…one slice.
Wait a minute…what is peaking out from the other half of the burger???
It is another slice of bacon! No that is what I am talking about White Castle. If you are going to have two layers of meat (and that term is used very loosely here) then you should have two layers of bacon! WELL DONE! So points for that.
I was pleasantly surprised when I bit into the double. As it turns out, that move of doubling up the bacon worked very well. Every bite had texture and a hint of smokey bacon taste. With the bacon nearly the same thickness of the meat, this industrial stuff didn’t get lost in the burger and actually provided good contrast!
When eating the bacon on it’s own, it was moderately salty, featured a slight hickory aroma, had decent snap when you bit into it but was still a little too chewy. It was still overly processed and sliced too thin BUT all in all not really too bad.
So let’s get to the BRS:

too chewy << 1 2 3 4 5 4 3 2 1 >> too crisp
OVERALL SCORE: 2.78
=================================
Helped along by their “Bacon Per Bite” and “Bacon Coverage” scores, White Castle finds itself respectfully smack in the middle of the pack. Not a bad showing and, given my very low expectations entering the restaurant, kinda surprising!
Next week – I am in search of a full service Dairy Queen!
