Halloween Week – “I Smelled Bacon…”

whooooooooooo….

One day to go before All Hallow’s Eve so time to bust out the ghost story!

9459_2

Of all places to find a bacon ghost story, this one is from tinycatpants.com. Yes, tinycatpants.com

Years ago a couple, the Andersons, moved to a little house on Ordway. Their neighbor was a little old man named Tim Macon, who lived alone now that his wife had died and his children had moved north.  He was a perfectly delightful neighbor. He’d come over to help Mrs. Anderson dig bulbs.  He could be counted on to watch the dog while they were on vacation.  And when Mr. Anderson needed someone to stand under the hood of his old beater with him, Mr. Macon was knowledgeable and brought beer.

And one day, Mr. Macon died.  He sat down to rest on the swing on his front porch and never woke back up.  It was as mild a death as one might have.  Which is, perhaps, why it didn’t seem to slow him down.

When the new neighbors moved in, the wife came running over to the Andersons’ one morning, almost in tears.

“I smelled bacon,” she said, as she started to calm down.  [Read more →]

Top Chef – Veggie Surprise…

Okay – I’ve been talkin’ about catching up with my “Top Chef” viewing and posting, but I just can’t seem to set any time to write about the last three episodes that I’ve missed.  I’ve literally had five pages of notes that keep getting moved from home to work to home to work…

So executive decision time, I’m just going to start fresh with last night’s show, “Meat Natalie“, then quickly touch on the last three “lost” episodes (Dinner Party / Pigs and Pinot / Restaurant Wars).

Let’s finally do this thing! [Read more →]

Halloween Week – Zombie Bacon II…

It really is an amazing world out there…type a few words in the old google machine and KA-POW, look what you can find…

Is there a better plush toy to give your little one than a zombiefied slice of bacon? I think not my friends.

Zombie Bacon the brainchild of makinbacon out of Seattle, available over at Etsy.  Just $12.00 kids…that is a bargain for any type of undead pork product!

Nerd News – BEST CAKE EVER!!!

It’s been a while since I posted a “Nerd News”.  There are plenty of other more established nerd sites that do a much better job at categorizing and snarking on all those wonderful things that dudes like me dig, but this is WAY TO GOOD not to share.

I present THE BEST CAKE EVER!!!

10330_196918688032_83374793032_3892291_7617675_n

There is no room for discussion.  If there is an existing list of BEST CAKES EVER, then this goes straight to number one where it will reign forever and ever.

Look closer at the detail…

Freakin’ Brilliant!!!

And better yet – it was a WEDDING CAKE!!!!  Okay, a Groom’s cake but STILL!!!

Dudes, any woman willing to allow a dead Tauntaun stuffed with Skywalker groom’s cake is a KEEPER.  Period, end of story.

Story from StarWars.com via Gizmodo via Geekologie & Topless Robot (Nerd News, especially this glorious, gets around).

Halloween Week – Ghost Bacon…

019

This is my favorite time of year!! Halloween is this Saturday and it is by FAR my bestest holiday. I’ve got my graveyard in my front yard and I’m all ready for lil’ trick or treaters this Saturday…

To celebrate, I’m attempting to bring a little “spirit” (ha, get it…man I am cleaver) to TDB this week. Keep a lookout…you never know what may be lurking in the kitchen ;-)

Above is “Ghost Bacon” by Thom May. Here is his description:

Ghost bacon is either bacon made by ghosts, or bacon for ghosts, or maybe both – no one knows, exactly. Owning this handsome print is your first step toward unlocking this timeless enigma.

That just kills me…I’d point you to his store, but there seems to be a error so….can’t.

Better with Bacon – Potato-Bacon Torte

Today’s recipe is a little more involved then those I typically gravitate too, but it’s looked and sounded so good that I thought I share.

It actually comes from Melissa d’Arabian, who was the winner of this last season’s “The Next Food Network Star
