More Eggs and Bacon – Now on Hot Dogs…
Yesterday we had a great breakfast/brunch recipe for bacon wrapped eggs. Today we share with you a gourmet hot dog recipe from my morning Detroit Free Press called the 3 a.m. Dog.
Created by Chef Aaron Cozadd of the Union Woodshop just north of me in Clarkston (also winner of the Free Press “Restaurant of the Year” Honor for 2011) comes this dog with egg and a bacon jam!

Treat Dreams are Made of This*…
Yesterday I made a beeline from my office to Treat Dreams in Ferndale for the unveiling of their newest ice cream in collaboration with The Hungry Dudes, a metro Detroit food blog.
And there it is! A sweet combination of stout, caramel, chocolate, brownie and bacon! Officially named “Snout & Stout Swirl“.
Eagerly I dug in, but all I seemed to get out of the first few bites was frozen creme and some caramel…where was the choco bacon brownie goodness?
Well I just had to dig a little deeper and turn that scoop upside down…there we go! Look at how gooey good that looks…and let me tell you, it was!
It was the first batch and with that knowledge I’d say a success! If I had to quibble, I would love to see the stout flavoring pumped up and the use of salted instead of sweet caramel. I think the later would compliment that bacon.
We haven’t broken out our ratings scale in a while, but I think it is appropriate here…so we officially give the new “Snout & Stout Swirl”:
8 1/2 piggies eating bacon!
Well done folks! I’ll be back after work soon for another scoop.

Comic Con 2011 – A Review…
Here is the official TDB review of Comic Con 2011…
First, Sideshow Collectables had several new product announcements which included this:
And that concludes our review of Comic Con 2011.
Seriously, I do not care about anything else! All the stuff on my nerd blogs this weekend was just noise when I saw this. This is my holy grail, my white whale! Ask Better Half, every year for Christmas I ask for ONE thing, Han Solo in Carbonite.
A company called Illusive Concepts had a Lucasfilm license back in 1996-97 and actually made the first commercially produced replica. At the time I believe it cost close to $2,000. I was but a young lad then, living with the one who would eventually become Better Half, and in NO way could I shed that much for a prop (Never mind the fact that I probably spend more than that on all the other little things I bought for my collection that year).
Well now things have changed! You could even say the “circle is now complete.” I’m old and I get paid pretty good. There was no pricing or any other information made available on the Sideshow site but I’ve got a number in my head (so does Better Half, but I’ll bet that number is less than the one I am thinking).
Stay tuned!

My Favorite Things – End of Work Week Treat…
yup, that’s some Jameson 15 year with a caramel pretzel Klondike bar.
I NEVER had liked the taste of salted (or just some salt with) caramel before this year and now I can not get enough. THIS Klondike is a taste treat that can not be beat. Pair that with a little whiskey, whiskey and some Tiger’s baseball…
Hey, I’m a married man with a little social life wrecker in the form of a 2 1/2 year old…it’s all about the simple pleasures.
Have a great weekend everyone. I’ll have some of my favorite nerd news from this weekend’s San Diego Comic Con next week along with your regular dose of bacony goodness…
PS – speaking of ice cream, if you are in the D-town area, make sure you come out to Treat Dreams in Ferndale on Monday for that bacon stout ice cream unveiling…

Treat Dreams and Hungry Dudes taking you to Ice Cream Heaven…
Thanks to Better Half and FoTDB Amanda, I now have plans next Monday night…
Treat Dreams, a “micro-creamery” in Ferndale, MI has teamed with Detroit food bloggers The Hungry Dudes to create a ice cream “unlike any you’ve tasted”. This unnamed concoction features a stout (beer) base with brownies, bacon, caramel, and chocolate!
The official unveiling and naming of this wondrous dessert will be next Monday at Treat Dreams from 7 – 9:00 pm. You can get more information and directions to Treat Dreams from The Hungry Dudes event page on Facespace.
I will be there with camera and spoon in hand. Care to join me?

Hey San Fran! Bacon Bacon hits the Road…
I’ve got friends in the Bay area…but not many of them eat the pork so this is a formal appeal to FoTDB in or near San Fran – Please, PLEASE get to this truck!
Bacon Bacon has hit the roads. This from UrbanDaddy:
You can order from a regularly changing menu (crafted by a Michael Mina vet) of a half-dozen sandwiches as well as fries. Try the Bacon Bacon Burger with a side of dirty fries (that come with fried pork belly trimmings) or one with pork belly and a fried egg. And even if you’re not a dessert guy, go for the chocolate-covered bacon strip.
Dirty fries…yummmmmmmmmm!

Back to Reality…
Hello all my bacon brothers and sisters! I’ve returned from my “man-cation” and am just about ready to get back into the swing of things.
Biggest decision of the day? To keep or not to keep the vacation beard…I’m really thinking yes. Then FoTDB Courtney (SHOUT OUT) sent me this:
Let’s just say I’m gonna take it day-by-day but for now…THE BEARD STAYS!
I hope all our new friends “enjoyed” last week’s “best of” posts. Brand spankin’ new bacon goodness returns tomorrow.

..and I got mine!!!!!
When I arrived home last night, I noticed the welcome mat on my front porch was leaning up over something. I just assumed that my bi-weekly comic book order had arrived as this was the normal way the UPS guys leaves my packages. I was half right, my books were delivered but also to my surprise I noticed a much larger box sitting with them. The box was from ThinkGeek.
Oh boy…it was finally here!
You know you want to see this thing…so follow me after the jump. [Read more →]

BEST OF TDB | Better with Bacon – Maple Bacon Milkshake…
We are away on vacation until July 12th. Until then, please enjoy these selected “Best Of” posts. This was originally published on 8/18/2009 and for close to a year and a half was the highest viewed post on the site.
With the recent “heat-wave” in Michigan, I thought a nice cool treat would help us all get through August.
Presenting…The Maple Bacon Milkshake (no photo available – writer’s artistic rendition)
Ingredients:
- 2 slices bacon (about 2 ounces), cut into thin strips
- 6 tablespoons cold whole or low-fat milk (about 3 ounces)
- 2 tablespoons pure maple syrup, preferably grade B (about 1 ounce)
- Pinch of salt
- 8 medium scoops French vanilla ice cream (about 1 quart), softened until just melty at the edges.
I have ALL these ingredients in my fridge right now…I think a TEST KITCHEN is in order!
Directions:
- Fry the bacon in a small skillet set over medium heat, stirring frequently, until rendered and crisp, about 5 minutes. With a slotted spoon, remove the cooked bacon to paper towels to drain, and nibble on it or reserve it for another use. Off the heat, briefly cool the fat in the skillet.
- Place the milk, maple syrup, 1 tablespoon of cooled bacon fat (if there is any more, you can discard it), salt and ice cream in a blender and pulse several times to begin breaking up the ice cream.
- With the blender motor off, use a flexible spatula to mash the mixture down onto the blender blades. Continue pulsing, stopping and mashing until the mixture is well blended, thick and moves easily in the blender jar, roughly 30 to 90 seconds. Pour into a chilled glass or glasses, and serve at once.
Makes about 3 1/2 cups
